How much does KeePassDroid cost?

KeePassDroid is a completely free Android app that lets you use KeePass software on your cell phone.

KeePass itself is a free password manager run by a private developer, so they ask for donations via Patreon or PayPal to keep the software running. However, donations are optional, and you are able to use KeePassDroid even if you don't donate.

KeePassDroid alternatives

KeePassDroid may not be the best choice for you and your needs, especially if you aren't technically minded. Therefore, other alternatives might be a perfect match.

  • NordPass: NordPass has all the features you need from a password manager like easy sharing, autofill, and a password strength report. At an affordable price, it makes it easy to create and safely store your passwords.

  • LastPass: LastPass syncs with an unlimited number of devices, provides emergency access, and makes it easy to share login credentials with others. It also has a passwordless login, so you would no longer need to remember your master password.

  • Keeper: Keeper has unlimited password storage, unlimited devices, and unlimited secure password sharing. You also have access to 24/7 customer support and an optional add-on for a concierge service to help you install and use Keeper.

KeePassDroid features

KeePassDroid is a port of the official KeePass software. Since it's independent, it doesn't have quite the same features as other options. Let's explore what KeePassDroid does and doesn't do.

Password sharing

KeePassDroid is stored locally on your device. It's not cloud software, which means that you can't easily share your password with other people or devices. You need to use a tool like Dropbox to manually synchronize login credentials between devices.

You could possibly share the Dropbox folder with other people, but they’ll need to download a port to access the information. It's a difficult task, especially if you aren't tech-savvy or patient.

Two-factor authentication

KeePassDroid has the option to require biometrics to open files, which provides a potentially more secure option than a master password. This means you would be asked to give your fingerprint in order to gain access to a file.

In order to enable biometric login, go into Settings and scroll down to Automatic biometric Login.

Password generator

KeePassDroid comes equipped with an in-app password generator. You can choose to customize your options by selecting certain features, such as:

  • Uppercase characters
  • Lowercase characters
  • Numbers
  • Special characters

Autofill

KeePassDroid doesn't have an autofill feature. Instead, you need to go to the app, copy the credentials, and paste them into your website or app. It seems like an unnecessary process since many other password managers have an autofill tool to do this work for you.

Password strength report

Another feature that KeePassDroid lacks is a password strength report. Many password managers will evaluate your passwords and provide you with a report on any red flags (like using the same password multiple times). However, KeePassDroid doesn't have this feature, nor does it have any way to notify you if your password was leaked on the dark web.

Digital legacy

Digital legacy is another feature that KeePassDroid doesn't have in its arsenal. It's an important feature in case you need to provide someone with emergency access to your passwords. Without it, no one can access crucial information that they may need if you're unavailable.

Our KeePassDroid experience

Overall, KeePassDroid was extremely confusing to install and isn't for the average user. We downloaded the app on an Android phone. After it was installed, there were no instructions on how to use it or how to import passwords from KeePass.

KeePassDroid Home Screen

The app only said to open or create a database, and either way, we were led to our Files to download a file. Eventually, we found a YouTube tutorial on the Google Play page for KeePassDroid. However, it was over a decade old and used outdated KeePass software as part of the demo. And the app isn't up-to-date in general since the latest version was released in 2022.

KeePassDroid Last Updated Date

Our experience left us feeling frustrated. Even though it's a free app, it only contained the bare necessities to count as a password manager. But even then, it was unusual to have a password manager with no ability to sync to other devices. As we mentioned earlier, you’ll need to use a file hosting service like DropBox to share information between devices.

KeePassDroid privacy policy

KeePassDroid is obviously accessing sensitive information. A strong privacy policy means that they won't unnecessarily see or use your data. KeePassDroid's privacy policy is extremely simple.

The entire policy is only two sentences long and states it doesn't collect any information from users and has offline security — not the most reassuring policy. In comparison, NordPass contains a whole section on how it protects your data.

KeePassDroid third-party audits

KeePassDroid has never undergone a third-party audit. Independent audits are essential for ensuring that a company is actively participating in data protection. KeePassDroid may be safe enough to protect your passwords, but it's hard to say without an audit.

Is KeePassDroid safe to use?

As far as we can tell, KeePassDroid has never been hacked or involved in a data breach. However, you may face issues if you try to sync KeePassDroid with other devices. You need to use a file-sharing service to sync passwords, and you need to ensure that it's a secure service.

KeePassDroid customer service

Customer service doesn't exist for KeePassDroid. There is a simple FAQ on the homepage of its website, or you can issue a bug report on Github for the developer to resolve a problem. However, don't get your hopes up. The last resolved issue was in August 2023.

KeePassDroid Github Issue Reports

As noted earlier, there’s a YouTube video with a tutorial on how to use KeePassDroid, but it uses outdated KeePass software. Overall, there isn't a person to talk to or any extensive online guides if you’re having problems.

KeePassDroid compatibility

KeePassDroid is only available for Android devices as a port for the Windows password manager, KeePass. If you want to use KeePass software on an operating system that isn't Windows or Android, then you'll need to find a different third-party app or port to use.

KeePassDroid FAQs

+

Is there an Android version of KeePass?

There are several Android versions of KeePass, including KeePassDroid. Other options include KeePass2Android, KeePassDX, KeepShare, JKeePass, and OneKeePass.

+

Is KeePassDroid safe?

KeePassDroid is generally safe to use. It's a port for KeePass software, which is encrypted. Unfortunately, KeePassDroid doesn't have a detailed privacy policy or any recent software updates. It does raise concerns about the overall security of KeePassDroid; it seems like a strong master password or biometrics is your best option to keep your data safe.

What’s the difference between KeePassDroid and KeePassDX?

KeePassDroid and KeePassDX are both Android ports for KeePass software. However, KeePassDX has significantly more features than KeePassDroid. KeePassDX has additional two-factor authentication, multiple design themes, and autofill.

Bottom line: Is KeePassDroid good?

KeePassDroid is one of many Android port options to use KeePass software. While it's completely free, it does have only the bare minimum features. It's also extremely technical to install and maintain syncing with other devices. KeePassDroid may only be suitable for advanced users.

Many password managers have features that KeePassDroid doesn't have like autofill, cloud syncing, and password strength reports. These features can make it easier to use the internet safely and across all devices. You may find it worth the extra cost to choose one of the best password managers with premium features.
